The really, really, really old stuff. You know, "slides" and "prints" from "film" that you had to get "developed"?

The waxing Awakening Moon (Neo-Pagan)

Through thin clouds, and trees...

In the Neo-Pagan system of belief, the April full moon is called the Awakening Moon.

April 2, 2015. Shot out my bedroom window at about 3:00 am, about a day before the full moon.

These are GoPro HD Hero2 videos of the live-streaming webcast of the Head Of The Charles Regatta 2014. Video was shot right off the full-screen webcast in a mostly-dark room, audio right out of the air by the GoPro onboard mic. Post-processing done in Adobe Premier Pro 6.0.5

I recorded only five races from HOTC 2014 that were relevant to the Vashon Island Rowing Club. Then, with the exception of Race 47 Women's Championship Fours, simply for brevity I do not show every boat in each race. That said, I do have VIRC and every other Pacific Northwest team that I could identify. Finally, my time stamps do not exactly match YouTube's. YouTube seems to be a little early. And I don't have much control over the thumbnails YouTube shows.

These videos are also all up on my playlist

Race 43 - Women's Youth Eights

Womens_Youth_Eights-800

Vashon Island Rowing Club is bow #79 at 10:13-10:60. VIRC's Womens Youth Eights finished ninth overall at 18:17:48!

Pacific Northwest teams: Green Lake Crew at 4:26; Sammamish Rowing Association at 5:25; bow #41 meets the Eliot Bridge at 6:26 and onward; Vashon Island Rowing Club at 10:13-10:50. One of the VIRC's Women's Youth Eights rowers' older sister also rowed at HOTC 2014 for the University of Miami in the Women's Championship Fours.

The DB General big crane visits Dockton, 10/24/2013

 · Set one · Set two ·

Got an interesting tip from third- (fourth- ?) generation Vashon Islander Jim Sherman that the DB General -- the largest floating crane on the West Coast of the United States, and based in Seattle -- would be paying Dockton WA a little visit to do some heavy lifting for the Washington State Department of Natural Resources: removing an old, derelict ferro-cement hull that had been scuttled just off-shore between Dockton Park and the Plancich's. At lower-low water the hull was barely two feet underwater, so it was considered a Hazard To Navigation...

We had been seriously socked-in with fog for good week previous, so I was a little skeptical of being able to get any kind of photos at all. Turned out the fog and the completely windless, glass-flat conditions made for some great photos!

Biggest problem was that, thinking all this was going to be going on pretty far off-shore, I brought my longest (70-200mm) telephoto zoom lens. Turned out the DB General was so bloody big (the barge itself is 100 feet wide and 300 feet long) that I had a real problem getting the whole thing in at once!

Cascade Cross Series: Thriller Cross 2011, 12/17/2011

 · Set one · Set two · Set three ·

"It's the least understood but most emphatically enjoyed faction of cycling. It's mud-bogging, sand-squirming, barrier-hopping, wet-grass-slipping, steep-pitch-scrambling fun.

It will make you want to puke. It will make you want to fall over. It will make you feel alive, and once your heart rate comes down, you'll want to do it again.

It's called Cyclocross, and it's like no other cycling discipline (but somewhat like all of them)."

I shot these photos at the Cascade Cross Series' Thriller Cross 2011 race on December 17, 2011, at Bellingham's Civic Fields Complex

Blood Moon (Wiccan - Neo-Pagan)

In the Wiccan system of belief, the October full moon is called the Blood Moon to mark that time of year when all but breeding stock are slaughtered and butchered to provide food for the coming winter.

October 12, 2011. Shot out my bedroom window at about 7:15 am, barely one hour before moonset, and about twelve hours after full moon.

The supposed "Rule of Thirds" in photographic composition. It's not a rule - you won't get punished if you "don't". It's a guideline that's been around since about 1797. I think about it a lot when I'm composing photos in post-processing. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it makes sense. Sometimes it doesn't.

This guy lives and hunts around the High School and in fact nests over on top of the microwave tower at the phone company building.

Shot out my living room window. I kept watching the sun slowly break out of the clouds as it was sinking lower and lower, and finally the light was just perfect!

The "Super Moon" - March 19, 2011

"March 16, 2011: Mark your calendar. On March 19th, a full Moon of rare size and beauty will rise in the east at sunset. It's a super "perigee moon"--the biggest in almost 20 years.

"The last full Moon so big and close to Earth occurred in March of 1993," says Geoff Chester of the US Naval Observatory in Washington DC. "I'd say it's worth a look."

Full Moons vary in size because of the oval shape of the Moon's orbit. It is an ellipse with one side (perigee) about 50,000 km closer to Earth than the other (apogee). Nearby perigee moons are about 14% bigger and 30% brighter than lesser moons that occur on the apogee side of the Moon's orbit."

8286_Full_moon_031911

I went up to Vashon Elementary School to get some high ground, and shoot as soon after moonrise as possible. Canon EOS 5D Mk II, EF 70-200mm f2.8L zoom lens @ 280mm; 1.4x extender; ISO 3200; manual exposure, f22 at 200th sec.

La Luna

Another photo that hews to the alleged "Rule of Thirds" thing pretty closely...
