Director's Note:"Life is a Cabaret, old chum. Come to the Cabaret." Our play production class opens with one of the most ambitious dramatic productions to date: Kander and Ebb's musical drama, "Cabaret." Set in 1930's Germany, the play follows the romance of American novelist Cliff Bradshaw, and British expatriate showgirl Sally Bowles. While the play is remembered for its extravagant musical mumbers, it also is a powerful drama that explores the rise of Nazi Germany, anti-Semitism, and bigotry. This is a production that has touched our students deeply. As they struggle to define their role in this complex world, and to "create the world they want to live in, starting here, starting now," they bring sensitivity to the production that is wise beyond their years. We spent many rehersals discussing why each character behaves the way they do when confronted with difficult moral decisions. They indentified closely with Cliff when he says "if you're not against all this, you're for it -- or you might as well be." Cabaret is an exciting production artistically. The music hums in your memory. But even more exciting are the questions it raises about our beliefs and behavior. As Fraulein Schneider asks: "What would you do?" I believe our students do very well. - Susan Hanson |
