"THE DARKHORSES"
"No. 6 Vashon (18-7) - The Pirates bring a good all-around package to their first state appearance since 1940, when they won the small school championship. Vashon beat tough Steilacoom to get to the tournament. Junior post Calvin Ento (22.0 points, 14.0 rebounds), the Nisqually League MVP, will be tough to stop, especially if senior Derek Shride is hitting 3-pointers. Vashon gets second shots and goes after the boards."
So we start out: Wednesday, March 10 1: Deer Park 65 vs. Blaine 83, 9 a.m. 2: Forks 49 vs. Foster 61, 10:30 a.m. 3: Quincy 46 vs. Rochester 47, noon 4: Vashon 71 vs. Omak 48, 1:30 p.m. 5: Grandview 53 vs. Pullman 64, 3:30 p.m. 6: Nooksack Valley 56 vs. Cleveland 54, 5 p.m. 7: Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) 49 vs. Elma 70, 6:30 p.m. 8: Woodland 45 vs. Wapato 79, 8 p.m. |

Saturday 03/06/99 games:
From the Seattle Times:
"UNIVERSITY PLACE - It took some last-second heroics, but the Vashon boys basketball team is going to the state tournament for the first time in school history."
"Calvin Ento scored on an inside shot with 2 seconds left to lift Vashon past Steilacoom 49-48 yesterday and earn the Pirates a spot in the Class 2A state tournament at the SunDome in Yakima."
"Vashon (18-7) had to survive two loser-out games in the last week to earn its first trip to state."
""I've been here for four years and put so much effort into it, and for it to happen my senior year is great," said Derek Shride, who had nine points."
"Vashon got off to a fast start, leading 14-5 after one quarter. But Steilacoom came back and led 23-22 at halftime. The game remained close throughout the second half. The score was tied four times in the fourth quarter before Steilacoom grabbed a 48-47 lead on a free throw by Brian Ford with 12 seconds left."
"Vashon took the ball inbounds and, instead of taking a timeout, worked the ball inside to Ento, who scored on a shot close to the basket for the game-winning points."
"Steilacoom's Naaman Hinton missed a long shot at the buzzer."
"Vashon helped itself in the fourth quarter by making 10 of 11 free throws in the final 8 minutes."
"Ento led Vashon with 16 points while Jeff Tucker added 12."

Dang! OK: so we gotta play Steilacoom today 03/06 at 2:30pm!
Winner goes to State as the #3 seed..
Cleveland and Foster play each other today, too, to determine the #1 and #2 seeds to State..
Tuesday 03/03/99:
"The Vashon High boys basketball team is just one victory away from a state playoff berth."
"The Pirates dominated the first-round 2A West Central District matchup against Orting, 68-46, Tuesday night at Curtis High."
""This was a very big game for us, because at this time last year we were out of the district tournament," Pirates guard Derek Shride said. "We knew we could get the job done, we just had to push ourselves.""
"The Pirates advance to play Foster at 6 p.m. Friday at Curtis. At stake is a berth in the Class 2A state tournament, March 10-13 in Yakima."
Second round Sub-Districts:
I think the Pirates played a good game against a team with a powerful full court press; a strong trap; and an uncanny sixth sense that lets them flash into the passing lane.
And then you add Naaman Hinton (16pts) -- I talked to his dad after the game, and he says Naaman is better at soccer and is kinda just waiting for basketball to get over with -- scary..
We were kept out of the low post pretty effectively, which meant that Calvin was held to 12 points. Steilacoom's zone defense kept the ball on the perimeter, and they picked up a lot of turnovers, not really from our errors, but from their attack on the pass.
I had (very roughly..) Derek Shride 20pt; Jesse Davis 13pt; Calvin Ento 12pt; Kenny Ento 8pt; Jeff Tucker 6pt; Jerod Cleland 3pt
We were down but stayed in the game and fought back to a tie; we were just three points short in overtime.
At the quarters: Q1 16V-17S; Q2 24V-32S; Q3 41V-47S; Q4 55V-55S; OT1 62V-65S
Other 02/26 games:
Orting 59, Chimacum 53 (loser out)
Port Townsend 63, Eatonville 48 (loser out)
Foster 72, Cleveland 67
First round Sub-Districts:
Woo Hoo! What a game! Calvin Ento had 23pt 21rb!; Jesse Davis 16pt; Kenny Ento 12pt; Derek Shride 16pt; Jeff Tucker 6pt including 3 big pts when fouled shooting a 3; Jonathan Irish 1; Jerod Cleland; Chris Hanusa. At the quarters: Q1 17V-9E; Q2 33V-34E; Q3 48V-44E; Q4 74V-64E!
Other 02/23/99 games:
Foster 58 -- Orting 49
Clevland 75 -- Chimacum 38
Steilacoom (14/5 -- 3/3 in the Nisqually League) ranked 8th; Foster (15/3 -- 6-1 Nisqually League) ranked 4th
Tuesday 02/16: Foster 58 -- Eatonville 56
"Calvin Ento sank the winning shot in overtime as the Pirates (15-5, 6-2 Nisqually League) defeated the Cruisers (4-13, 1-6) on the road.
Ento scored 32 points while teammate Derek Shride added 19."
Again, I haven't heard what happened, but the box score suggests Eatonville had three solid quarters, but our 1st quarter and the OT were enough to win..
Other games 02/09: Foster 62 -- Steilacoom 53
Seattle Christian 63 -- Orting 48
"Vashon 78, Orting 46 - The Pirates got off to a quick start and never looked back in a Nisqually League victory on the road."
"After a 24-point first quarter, Vashon (13-5, 5-2) cruised and remained second in the league standings behind Foster (13-3, 5-1)."
"The Pirates, shooting for their first state-tournament berth, got 28 points from Calvin Ento."
I dunno - it was too exciting!
