"Since 1987, the Vashon community and the Vashon Community Schoarship Foundation have given away more than $1,000,000 in scholarships to hundreds of graduates of the Vashon School District. The idea behind this tradition took seed in the fall of 1986 ... A few months later, 29 students from the Class of 1987 received over $12,000 in scholarships donated by Island professional groups, service organizations, and individuals and families who valued education.
This year, 166 scholarships totaling $117,625 will be distributed to 85 graduating seniors who completed scholarship notebooks. Almost half this amount will be given by non-profit organizations."
