Football coach Mark Henderson expects what may be one of the most sucessful seasons in recent years.
The Varsity team includes: Nick Guglomo, fullback and 1998 Nisqually League defensive MVP; Kenny Ento, running back; Alex Rudinsky, defensive line; Ryan Mattingly, defensive line; and Jason Didricksen, defensive back and quarterback, all returning seniors.
Sophomores include starting quarterback Chris O'Brien; and Sean Donnelly, running back, who are moving up from JV.
What the Tacoma News-Tribune says:
"1998 - 5-4 overall, 4-4 league. Base offense - Wing-T. Base defense - 5-2. Returning starters - 4 offense, 6 defense. Key players - HB Kenny Ento, 6-3, 190, Sr.; FB Nick Guglomo, 6-1, 190, Sr.; MLB Ryan Mattingly, 6-0, 200, Sr.; DT Alex Rudisky, 6-2, 210, Sr.; DB Jason Didricksen, 5-10, 175, Sr.; HB Sean Donnelly, 5-10, 180, So.; QB Chris O'Brien, 5-10, 160, So.; OL/DL Chris Anderson, 6-1, 170, Jr. Outlook - With a rare combination of size, speed and strength, Kenny Ento - a starter on Vashon's state basketball team last season - should be fun to watch once he gets his hands on the ball. The Pirates' fans will benefit from a refurbished stadium this fall as well, as all the wood has been replaced. If they stay healthy, the Pirates might surprise a few teams."
