The DB General big crane

Got an interesting tip from third- (fourth- ?) generation Vashon Islander Jim Sherman that the DB General -- the largest floating crane on the West Coast of the United States, and based in Seattle -- would be paying Dockton WA a little visit to do some heavy lifting for the Washington State Department of Natural Resources: removing an old, derelict ferro-cement hull that had been scuttled just off-shore between Dockton Park and the Plancich's. At lower-low water the hull was barely two feet underwater, so it was considered a Hazard To Navigation...We had been seriously socked-in with fog for good week previous, so I was a little skeptical of being able to get any kind of photo at all. Turned out the fog and the completely windless, glass-flat conditions made for some great photos.Biggest problem was that, thinking all this was going to be going on pretty far off-shore, I brought my longest (70-200mm) telephoto zoom lens. Turned out the DB General was so bloody big (the barge itself is 100 feet wide and 300 feet long) that I had a real problem getting the whole thing in at once! |
