The supposed "Rule of Thirds" in photographic composition. It's not a rule - you won't get punished if you "don't". It's a guideline that's been around since about 1797. I think about it a lot when I'm composing photos in post-processing. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it makes sense. Sometimes it doesn't.

Go to the top The "Super Moon" - March 19, 2011"March 16, 2011: Mark your calendar. On March 19th, a full Moon of rare size and beauty will rise in the east at sunset. It's a super "perigee moon"--the biggest in almost 20 years. "The last full Moon so big and close to Earth occurred in March of 1993," says Geoff Chester of the US Naval Observatory in Washington DC. "I'd say it's worth a look." Full Moons vary in size because of the oval shape of the Moon's orbit. It is an ellipse with one side (perigee) about 50,000 km closer to Earth than the other (apogee). Nearby perigee moons are about 14% bigger and 30% brighter than lesser moons that occur on the apogee side of the Moon's orbit." I went up to Vashon Elementary School to get some high ground, and shoot as soon after moonrise as possible. Canon EOS 5D Mk II, EF 70-200mm f2.8L zoom lens @ 280mm; 1.4x extender; ISO 3200; manual exposure, f22 at 200th sec.
