Home Game Sketches..
- Tuesday 02/17 82-79 win over Portland: OK: this is it! The last home game of the season against the West-winning Portland Power! <sigh> - well, we can't win 'em all - we already know that!
We start off the evening with an announcement by Gary Cavali (ABL President) that Jim Weyermann (Reign GM) is moving to the ABL front office, to be replaced by Karen Bryant (Assistant GM) as Reign GM - this was already widely known - and an announcement by Jim Weyermann that Tammy Holder will be hired permanently as coach, along with Nancy Wilson, Tammy's assistant. GOOD NEWS: the Reign players seem genuinely excited with the announcement - even though this can't be a surprise to them! All of this gets an extended standing ovation from the crowd of 4,125.
So now all we gotta do is play the game...
And...
Is Portland cold tonight, or just over-confident? We don't care! We come out strong and take the first quarter 25-14!
And the second quarter 45-23!!
And the third quarter 59-55!!!
And shout down the sizable block of Portland fans' chant of "POWER! POWER!" with a truly deafening "REIGN!! REIGN!! REIGN!! REIGN!! REIGN!! REIGN!!"
And win our last home game against the second-best team in the entire ABL by a score of 82-79!!!!
The Reign just played a great game all the 'way through - it was really tight going down the stretch but we didn't give up: Portland was ahead by one with 23 seconds left when Shay's putback was blocked straight up into the sky and fell straight back down for a score! Kate was fouled and with ice-water in her veins sank both free-throws to put us up by three and we held!
Kate was hot-hot-hot with a season best 23pt 3rb 3ast including 4 3-pointers; Bird 16pt 6rb 5ast and Shay 16pt 5rb 4ast were next; Val had 14pt 11rb!! 3ast; Kira 6pt 0-and-0; Angela 3pt 3-and-1; Rhonda 2-1-1 and Astou 2-2-and-0.
(Portland's Natalie Williams clinched the ABL scoring and rebounding titles - play was halted each time she set a new mark and the crowd gave her a standing-O each time! Natalie scored 29 points and grabbed 18 rebounds and finished the season tied with New England's Carolyn Jones at 21.9 points a game but has scored one more point than Jones, 964-963. Natalie averaged 11.6 rebounds a game.)
After the victory a celebration broke out with all the fans standing and clapping in unison for minutes...
A presentation of $10,300 from USWest to the Atlantic Street Community Center (from which our fabulous Yell Girls came!) base on Reign 3 point shots for the season was made; and then Christy Hedgpeth took the microphone to make a statement and when someone in the audience yelled "Happy Birthday Christy!" and Christy went "..oh..yeah.." we all sang her Happy Birthday!
So we end the season on a
tremendously positive note!
- Saturday 02/07 74-62 win over Columbus: Sheesh still! Which Reign team is going to show up - Jekyl or Hyde? Are we up for the game or are we gonna be down?
Tonight we were up! The Reign played a fabulous solid game against a Columbus team which, granted, seem flat - but which is the ABL leading team with a record of 32 wins and only 7 losses coming into the game!
We took Amanda D. Maria T. and Sarah M. as part of our celebration of Rosalie's thirteenth birthday! These four girls are all members of the McMurray Middle School girls' basketball team!
We had pretty good seats in the lower level corner behind the Reign bench - not quite as good as our season tickets, but hey! So, we get to watch a solid performance from tipoff to the end: Q1 up 26-14! Q2 40-22! Q3 57-40! and final score of 74-62!
A great crowd of 4,125 watched Val get 20pt 4rb 3ast, Shay 12pt 6rb 5ast, and Rhonda get 10pt 2rb - but also support from Angela 8pt 3rb 4ast, Bird 8pt 6rb 6ast, Kate 6pt 3rb 2ast, Joy 6pt 2rb, and Hedge 4pt 3rb. Seattle shot .500 vs .292 (whooo..) from the floor but .767 vs .824 from the freethrow line.
Autographs after by the two Kates - Paye and Starbird - and by Triumph the Reign-bird!
Kate Paye is sponsoring a girls' Basketball Academy this summer July 7-10 through the Puget Sound Sports Council - contact pssports@juno.com - Rosalie went to a Seattle Reign camp last summer and it was great!
Kate Starbird still has a splint on her left little finger (broken against Long Beach on January 11 if I remember correctly..) but said that it wasn't slowing her down too much now except to put her left-hand dribbling off a little...
After the game, back to Vashon Island and dinner at the Mexican restaurant Casa Bonita (206.463.6452) and the traditional birthday photo under the Big Sombrero!
- Friday 02/06 67-83 loss to Long Beach: Sheesh again! Which Reign team is going to show up - Jekyl or Hyde? Are we up for the game or are we gonna be down?
Tonight we were down down down: I thought the team was really flat, and the lousy officiating did not help - one ref apparently had no understanding of what travelling is and we were denied a significant number of turnovers as a consequence early in the game. I think the ABL seriously needs to examine the spotty quality of the officiating because the league needs all the credibility it can muster...
We really had nothing for 'em: Val had 20pt 7rb 0ast, but after that scoring fell off a cliff: Shay had 16pt 5rb 3ast, and Hedge (!) was next with 11pt 2rb 2ast, and then Joy and Kate with 5pt, and Rhonda and Linda with 4pt and Bird with 2pt - and that was it...
Down Q1 11-20, Q2 33-37, Q3 48-60, and lose 67-83; Seattle shoots .379 (!!) from the floor vs .532 for Long Beach, although we do get .741 vs .765 in freethrows. Long Beach had four in double figures (Griffith 21pt, Johnson 17pt, Lacy 12pt, and Williams 10pt) and are clearly driving hard into the season finish and the playoffs.
But this was a good example of Seattle's strategic shortcomings and a contender's strengths: we simply do not have a fast sharp starting point guard (I'm sorry, Kate..) and we do not have a couple of thugs who can play a physical game down at the low post all night long.
I felt really sorry for Val and Shay and Astou, watching them get beat up by Lacy at 6'4" 210lb and Griffith at 6'4" 180lb and Bauer at 6'4" 178lb - we just don't have enough bulk down low. And I'm sorry again, but let's face it: Linda is just not a factor and can't even hold off the enemy long enough to let Val catch her breath.
Anyone we can muster into the low post postion averages 178 pounds and maybe 6'3" - that's just not cutting it down low. So we have a wealth of good-to-excellent forwards and 2-guards but not what we need at either end of the spectrum.
And that's what I think...
We got cool Shalonda Enis ABL All-Star MVP player posters - autographs after by Shalonda and Linda - but we didn't stay because we're getting ready for Rosalie's birthday party tomorrow...
- Tuesday 02/03 74-64 win over Philadelphia: Sheesh! Which Reign team is going to show up - Jekyl or Hyde? Are we up for the game or are we gonna be down? Tonight we were up for it: Q1 26-14, Q2 40-27, Q3 53-47, and win 74-64!
Granted that Philadelphia is in a slump but who wouldn't be having just played Columbus in a home-away back-to-back and having lost both.
But basically we played a great game, and Astou was fantastic with 26 points for a season best and 8 rebounds for another season best - she played an awesome game!
We had solid help from Shay 14pt 6rb 1ast; Val a double-double with 12pt 11rb 2ast; Angela 11pt 5rb 5ast; Bird 8pt 3rb 4ast; and Kate 3pt on freethrows and 8ast which is her season best!
Seattle shot .452 vs .387 from the floor and .833 vs .706 from the charity stripe, and we had 13 steals and 17 turnovers vs 5 steals and 21 turnovers for Philadelphia!
Attendance 3,129
- Friday 01/30 66-77 loss to Portland: Missed the game: let my ex- take Rosalie to a game with our season tickets. Probably just as well...
Listened to the game on 96.1 KXXO. Pretty damned depressing. I'm sorry. This is just the kind of game a team has to win to go to the dance. Up 23-14 Q1, up 34-28 Q2, and then meltdown and down 49-57 Q3 and lose 66-77.
If we can't beat Portland in our own gym with that kind of crowd (apparently standing room only, or close to it) when it's crunch time (and it was crunch time), then we're not good enough to go to the playoffs... It's that simple.
- Friday 01/20 89-81 win over Colorado: OK! Now this was a great game!
Down by four at Q1; down by 10 at Q2 and we all go "..here we go again.." and then the Reign comes out for the third quarter and fights and stays in the game and we're up by six at the end of Q3!
And we continue to fight and scrap and play solid ball and the Reign wins by eight 89-81 at the end!
Particularily great to watch was the pass down low to Bird on the right, who passes back out top and follows the ball up to the elbow as Shay runs the baseline from left side to right and takes a sharp pass back in for a jumpshot from 14'-15' feet out at the right corner; or who takes a pass into the paint and drop-steps into a close-in bankshot off the backboard!
This worked repeatedly and was a great play!
Good crowd - and I choked at my shot for 30 seconds of fame in front of all of them! I've been entering a drawing at every home game for a chance to shoot three shots from about 16-18 feet out to win a free dinner for two at the Five-Spot Restaurant -- and this time they pulled my name!
I got out on the floor between Q1 and Q2 for my chance - no practice - no warmups - and the rim looked like it was right there! I rimmed-off all three shots! The shot from the center of the key was closest: off the back of the rim and off the front of the rim and - it trickled off out of the basket rather than falling back in! The crowd groaned! Hey! I still got a $10.00 off coupon for a meal...
Funny... I can hit shots from that distance all day long in the gym when no one's around.. <sigh>
- Friday 01/11 66-82 loss to Long Beach: Well, Long Beach is a damned strong team lately, and showed it tonight...
ditto re: being too busy to keep this up and I don't really recall much detail since I'm typing this on 01/23/98..
- Friday 01/06 82-68 win over New England: Another solid win! Val 25pt 10rb; Shay 22pt 12rb; Bird 17pt 7rb; Joy 10pt 2rb; Kate 6pt 2rb.
Another wild celebration by the crowd at the win!
But, basically I've been too busy to keep this up and I don't really recall much detail since I'm typing this on 01/23/98..
- Friday 01/02 80-69 win over Atlanta: OK! We finally play an entire game like the Reign is capable of doing! Generally a solid consistent performance through the game and particularily during the third and the fourth quarters - we didn't go flat and we didn't get panicky!
Shay was awesome with a double-double! 27 points and 15 rebounds! Good support from Val with 17pt and 7rb, Bird with 14pt and 4rb 5ast, and Angela with 10pt 6rb and 4ast. Kate 6pt; Astou 4pt 2rb; Kira with 2pt 1rb and 2ast: when we get more points support from other Reign players - watch out!
The Reign shot .448 from the floor and .630 as freethrows - a good improvement! 15 turnovers vs 19 for Atlanta; 10 steals vs 9 for Atlanta; 20 personal fouls vs 22 for Atlanta with a technical called at the end where Shay made both baskets!
A crowd of 3,306 that went nuts as the Reign won! And rightfully! The win was a long time coming!
Bird: "It (the crowd's reaction) threw us! It was like we had won a world championship or something!"
It was awesome!
NEWS FLASH!! NEWS FLASH!! NEWS FLASH!!
AS I TYPE THIS SUNDAY 01/04 SEATTLE HAS JUST BEATEN LONG BEACH 88-80!!
SHALONDA SCORES A REIGN-RECORD 39 POINTS AND PULLS DOWN 13 REBOUNDS!
ANOTHER DOUBLE-DOUBLE!!
GO REIGN!!
I'm watching the end of the Sunday Portland-San Jose game now and the crowd at Portland went into a standing ovation as the announcer gave the results of the Long Beach loss to Seattle! Portland won over San Jose 79-67!
- Sunday 12/28 65-72 loss to San Jose:
and
- Sunday 12/19 70-71 loss to San Jose:
Sheesh! Have we seen enough of San Jose or what? Really the same story for both games:
So fine - we've got a new coach who coaches during the game, rather than waiting for the game to happen. I think the coaching's improved, both during the game and outside of it. So what's happening?
Tactically within the game we are missing too many free throws (shot .516 on 12/28) or we're stone cold from the floor (shot .381 12/19 and .354 12/28) or both. And, we seem to be giving up too many fouls in the closing minutes.
Strategically we're still not getting set up and then quickly executing plays when we come down court - and if the first set doesn't work we seem to lapse into improvisation as the shot clock winds down..
I like the full court press but Azzi's (and San Jose generally) hard to press effectively and not get beaten.
One interesting moment in the 12/28 game that may mean absolutely nothing: we get a defensive rebound in the first half and (I think) Val and Angela break downcourt with their backs to the ball (!) and Bird throws the ball right past them as they are open under our basket - they didn't see it coming and Bird didn't wait for them - just kapow! right past 'em.
Bird didn't even cross halfcourt before she turned back toward the San Jose end. I read a lot of frustration into her expression - I don't think the coaching or the team has been able to make much use of Kate Starbird's considerable strengths..
Finally, as a pointless whine about the 12/28 game, one ref was just flat whistle-happy: when you get 4 players fouled-out (Whiting; Azzi, Gaither, Machanguana) and three more (Aycock, Paye and Starbird) with 5 or 4 fouls, the ref is having too much influence over the outcome of the game, and here is where we lost points by missed free throws. He also lost track of whether one of our foul shots was for one or two attempts. Probably the worst officiating I've seen.
Good crowds both nights (3,194 12/19 and 3,479 12/28) and the Yell Girls are great! Great half-time game 12/28 by the Seattle Firefighters vs the Seattle Police (all women). Winner: Seattle Police.
Autographs after 12/19 by Astou Ndaiye #44 and Rhonda Smith #40; I think by Angela Aycock #12 and Kate Paye #3 12/28
- Sunday 12/14 69-75 loss to Portland: A danged exciting game - even though we lost! Great to see a coach up on her feet almost the whole second half, yelling directions and gesturing to her players, and heckling the refs when they needed it (like all the time..) Tammy coached the game instead of just waiting for the game to happen.
So what happened? We missed a lot of free throws during regulation time and caused some fouls in the second OT that gave up some points when we didn't need to - right there is enough points to have given us the win.. There were some errant passes and some hesitation bringing the ball down court again - we had at least two turnovers on shot-clock violations that I can clearly remember.. Other than that it was an exciting game and hard-fought all the way through!
Val 24pt 7rb 39min; Shay 20pt 11rb 40min; Bird 15pt 1rb 42min; after that not much: Kira and Astou 3pt, and Angela and Kate 2pt.. and that was it.. only 7 players with points..
A good, very vocal crowd, and the new Yell Girls (complementing the Yell Guys!) are fabulous! Let's see more of 'em!!
Autographs after by Kate Starbird #30 and Linda Godby #45, and informally by Christy Hedgpeth #25, who seemed to be Christmas shopping at the Reign Shop on the south end of the playing floor after the game!
- Sunday 12/07 71-74 loss to New England: Missed the game again: Rosalie is playing the part of Winifred Meeks, Student Nurse, in "Intrigue at Sea: The Voyage of the Rusty Flower" at the Blue Heron Center for the Arts here on Vashon.
Listened to the game on 96.1 KXXO. Reign up 20-10 end Q1; up 42-34 end Q2; up 55-51 end Q3; lose by 71-74 in a heartbreaker (at least for me..)
At about 3:00 Q4 Reign down 68-69 New England fouls Kate with :04 on the shot clock but Kate gets only 1 of 2 tying 69-69; Jones of N/E fouled and gets both 69-71; Val is fouled and gets both 71-71; shotclock turn-over to Seattle!! GO BIG D!!; Offensive foul against Kate; N/E bad pass goes to Kate; Bird looses the ball out-of-bounds at 1:10 still 71-71; Jones N/E travels - turn-over to Seattle at :48; Bird looses the ball at :25.2 - ball to Rizotti; N/E timeout :14 71-71; N/E inbounds and Rizotti hits a 3 at :10.4 71-74; the Reign call timeout to set up a play and inbounds at midcourt down 71-74 with :10.4 on the clock; Ball touched by Kate and by Hedge and no one can get a shot off; Clock expires and the Reign lose 71-74...
Val 22pt 7rb 36min; Astou 10pt 3rb 16min; Shay 9pt 8rb 35min; Rhonda (!!) 7pt 2rb 6min; Kate 4pt 3rb 16min; Bird 7pt 3rb 26min; Joy 6pt 2rb 26min; Hedge 6pt 4rb 15min; Kira 0pt 0rb 24min
- Thursday 12/04 66-79 loss to Columbus: Missed the game: I'm now co-coaching a 3 month-long twice-weekly basketball camp for McMurray Middle School girls; Rosalie is going out for the team when the season starts February 1, 1998. We've got about 18-20 girls on Thursday nights and maybe 10 on Saturday days because soccer season is still running (Hey! soccer season is always running..)
Tried to listen to the game on 96.1 KXXO but the reception on Vashon is really lousy from this Olympia-based station. Got tuned in the third quarter when the Reign went from 17 down to six down at the end of the third. The Reign pulled to within 3 in the fourth and then the signal slowly faded out into Vietnamese well into the fourth quarter with Columbus up by 10; I finished listening to the game in the car; the Reign lost 66-79.
Shay 23pt 9rb; Val 14pt 6rb; Kate 11pt; Bird 9pt; Joy 4; Kira 3; and Angela and Hedge with 2 each - I think that adds up..
- Friday 11/28 85-61 win over Long Beach: Now this was the game we have been waiting to see! Our New Look starters: Kira, Joy, Shay, Bird and Val, and a lot of playing time for Astou (18pt xxrb)! Shay had 21pt, Bird had 11pt, Kira had 11pt, Val had 11pt - Solid contributions from everyone - Kate, Hedge, and Angela particularily.
Autographs after by Kate Paye #3 and Angela Aycock #12
- Friday 11/21 84-89 loss to Atlanta: This game should not have been lost. Ahead by what? 16? 17? at the start of the fourth quarter and lose by five.. Someone should have been inside Teresa Edwards' (46pt 7rb 7ast) jersey, but no one was.. We started a different lineup (Astou, Kira and Joy starters - Val injured ankle - and Shay and Bird) and should have stayed with them.. Kate Paye ended up with more minutes than either Kira or Joy - that suggests a change of heart or a lack of confidence on Hullah's part, to me..
Autographs after by Kira Orr #21 and Rhonda Smith #40..
- Saturday 11/14 65-68 loss to Portland: A damned frustrating game all around! If only we could get half of some of the slightly errant shots to drop, we woulda won.. If only we had a few less errant passes and unforced turnovers, we woulda.. If only we had some REBOUNDING - both offensive and defensive - CONSISTENTLY - we woulda.. If only we had less hesitancy and more drives to the basket, we woulda.. A little difference in only one of these areas woulda made all the difference necessary..
There was a lot of good play on our part, but we had offense from Val (23pts-career high) only, really: Joy had 10pt and 10rb, Shay 10pt, Angela 11, and Kira 7 - Bird has gotta be sick - she played little and was flat; Kate seemed very hesitant - both had 14min and 0pts..
A good crowd - 3,381 - and vocal! Autographs after by Astou Ndiaye #44 and Joy Holmes #42
- Wednesday 11/12 86-79 win over Philadelphia: A great game all around! (OK - maybe great is relative, but hey..) - Good offensive rebounding; good penetration into the paint; good perimeter passing and good spacing on the floor.
Shay getting 33 pts and 12 rebounds doesn't hurt; Angela, Val and Bird all had 11, which is OK; Kate, Kira, Christy and Rhonda had between 4-6pts each which is... hmmm.. Basically, Shay picked us up..
Good crowd, and a vocal one, at last! Triumph the Reign Bird was great, and apparently the person-in-the-mascot is now semi-permanent and the same person who does the Sonics and [the hockey team's] mascot
Autographs after by Christy (Hedge) Hedgpeth #25 (who was Rosalie's coach at last summer's Reign Hoops basketball camp!) and Val Whiting #52
- Saturday 11/08 75-83 loss to Long Beach: This team's players are better than their record - I'm seeing too many turn-overs when the shot clock expires; I'm seeing too many long passes or desperation passes inside; I'm seeing us with 10 seconds left on the shot clock and the ball hasn't even penetrated past the top of the key.
This is all (IMHO..) because the plays that are set up aren't working. This isn't street ball - these women aren't out there playing on instinct or improvisation. The plays they are being given by the coach aren't working. The coaching they are being given by the coach isn't working.
What we get then is Bird trying drive to the basket on instinct late in the game - she's gonna end up hurt doing this because this is big, physical pro ball and everyone is laying in wait for her.
Bird was (22pt) productive; Shay was (16pt) productive; Val was (16pt) productive; but Kate had 6pt and Angela had only 4pt; I had Linda for 8 pts but she needs to get hands-hands-hands - she's a center, she's gotta catch the ball; after that there was just about nobody - Joy Holmes played 20 minutes but didn't take a shot (!)
Moderate crowd - a lot of whom seemed to be Adults with-a-capital-A who needed to be Adult and therefore can't speak above a conversational tone of voice, and who spent a lot of time chatting with their partners and not focusing on the game.
And there was the guy back up behind us who kept on going "..come on girls.." - GIRLS? Excuse me? What planet is this guy from? I don't think he was trying to be insulting.
No autographs after due to "..travel schedule.." Hmm... And tomorrow we play at Long Beach! Hang on, folks! It's Test-of-Faith-Time!
- Friday 10/31 77-93 loss to Colorado: Went Trick-or-Treating
as the only adult with 2 fourth-graders, 5 seventh-graders, and 1
eighth-grader (5 girls and 3 boys) Heck of a lot less frightening than if
I'd gone to the game - Kate Starbird (career high 22 pt): "..the game was
lost on the defensive end.." - Shalonda Enis (20 pt 13 rb): "..a team
comes in here, on our home floor, and beats us by 20 or whatever.
Something is wrong with (you), not them.." Coach Jacquie Hullah: "..We do
not have enough wins this season to be so casual defensively.." The Reign
shot 40% (25-63) from the field
- Wednesday 10/29 99-94 win over San Jose: An OK crowd - Shalonda
Enis career high 23 pt - Kate Starbird tied career high 21 pt - Reign
started out 10-0 - led by as much as 26 pt during 2q - came out cold 3q and San Jose caught up but never led - Jennifer Azzi (19pt) fouled out :-) - Linda Godby and Christy Hedgpeth both played, Christy quite well - autographs after by Shalonda Enis #10 and Angela Aycock #12!
- Sunday 10/19 79-62 win over Colorado: A very good crowd but not
many kids - Kate Starbird (16 pt) made a dynamite move to the hoop at the
end of the second quarter - Debbie Black (Colo) is a real pest! -
Tari Philips (now Colo) 18 pt 11 rb - Christy Hedgpeth was in street
clothes - Linda Godby didn't play - autographs after by Kate Paye #3 and
Kira Orr #21
We went to five or six games last season and saw some great basketball!
The Mercer Arena is small enough that all the seats are pretty good, even
if you get tickets at the last moment. And with even a medium-size crowd,
the Arena is Really Loud!
This year we decided to spring for season tickets (!) so we've got two
seats right above court level, in Section 3, Row A, at the
corner of the baseline and the sideline, on the Seattle Reign end of the
court!
The team looks to have improved quite a bit from last year, when it was
pretty darn good, anyway:
- Kate Starbird (G 6-2 Stanford University '97) will be a tremendous addtition
- Val Whiting (C 6-2 Stanford '93) was acquired by trade from the San
Jose Lasers
- Shalonda Enis (F 6-1 Alabama '97) is a first-round ABL draft pick
First-year Reign players returning include:
Other additions this year:
- Astou Ndiaye (F/C 6-3 Southern Nazarene '97) '97 ABL draft second
round
- Joy Holmes (F 5-10 Purdue '97) '96 ABL draft eight round (but did not
sign)
- Kira Orr (PG 5-6 Duke University '97) '97 ABL draft fourth round
GO REIGN!
