The GoPro takes at hit! Oh noes!!
I set up my GoPro HD Hero2 on a light stand pushed right up against the corner of the bleachers to use as a B-Camera while shooting VIHS Varsity Volleyball v Seattle Academy. Of course it didn't get out of warm-ups before a light stand leg was hit by a volleyball. Surprising how easily the GoPro mounts were thrown out of whack by a volleyball hitting the leg of the light stand. Gotta think about that. Saving it in post-processing isn't a permanent solution.
Really this was just kind of a dry run to see if I can get any useful footage out of the GoPro in the Vashon Island High School gym. The answer is yes, definitely. If I can figure out some way to set it up where it won't get hit by anything...

The Coach's cut videos were shot with my GoPro HD Hero2 and zoomed to 150% in post-processing, so they're pretty sketch. The #4 Director's Trailer video was shot with my Canon EOS 5D Mark II DSLR with a Røde VideoMic and are more what I want to be making as a finished video. Going to try to get back to the rest of the game Real Soon Now...

OK: this is the good stuff. Shot with my Canon EOS 5D Mark II DSLR with a Røde VideoMic on the 5D Mark II. Video post-processing was done in Adobe Premier Pro CS6. The Canon DSLR and the Røde VideoMic were mounted onto a Manfrotto MVH-502A video head which sits atop my Manfrotto tripod.

I wanted to get out after school during sports practices and at least check in with the outside teams (girls soccer, football, cross country, boys tennis) and just see how things were going and how the new campus looked after its first summer.
And everything looks pretty great! Some big news: the Robert Rock has finally made it into its new home out at the vistor's bleachers (which I can understand, even though I'd put it right back where it was at the entrance to the stadium so that everyone could always see it...).
And, the Bill Burby Memorial is now sited at that three-bench conversation pit (only way I've ever been able to describe it) under the trees in the tennis-courts/gym entry landscaping.
And again on the good-news side, the parking bumper at the west end of the parking spaces fronting the tennis courts HAS BEEN REPLACED!!! (If you don't know what I'm referring to here, um... OK...)

Sure is one heck of a lot of grass out to the west of the new high school.
Perfect for frisbee and stuff during lunch!

So we're getting right down to it: last day of classes before Holiday Break, December 20, 2013.
First day of classes in the New Vashon Island High School, January 6, 2014.
In between, moving; resetting the construction perimeter to allow access to the new school and prepare for the A Building and B Building demolitions; a surplus sale on Saturday, January 4, 2014; a community Open House in the new school on Sunday, January 5, 2014. And moving.

Early fall 2013. The site generally is improving, but certainly looks unfinished. Clearly all the action is happening inside.

The construction perimeter remains where it's been all summer...
And ... the construction perimeter is reset somewhat to allow access to the A Building and the office...

The days are getting longer. Many parts of the new high school's building are starting to take shape.

Big question: how long before the building's shell is complete, and all the changes are hidden inside?

More and more of the actual building footprint, and the actual mass of the building, is becoming visible.

The Holidays happen. And Winter Sports. I finally make in down in daylight in early February. We wonder about the effects of a *really* long homerun. And find the Robert Rock and other memorials are still safe.

You can actually get the sense that there's going to be a building.

It had been about four weeks since I'd been down during the daylight hours. Steel!

Progress! The A Building Wall gets a make-over for Homecoming, and there's HVAC ducting going down where the floor of the Theater will be!

About 45 minutes before game time. Parking was a little scarce out front, so people arrived early.
|

Looking across the front of the gym. C Building was dead straight ahead. B Building is off in the background. The A building is back off to the far right. The green stuff on the ground is new hydroseeding. In one sense you could say that this is the first part of the new Vashon Island High School to get finished.

This was really the first big deadline: on August 28, 2012, the admin staff and the teachers had to be able to get into the VHS buildings to start getting ready for the upcoming school year. Which meant that the construction perimeter had to be almost completely reset to the configuration that would be permanent through the majority of the construction cycle. Which meant that anything *outside* of that perimeter had to either be finished, or under secure cover. Skanska made it!

The C building was at those piles of gravel off in the background. The B building has had its north end cut off. You can see the temporary gravel walkway out to the Stadium right along the gym.
